I strongly recommend everyone to do their first playthrough offline.Even if you don't plan on using the pve/pvp system, you'll still see all those messages & blood stains pilling up next to secrets or traps, totally spoiling the sense of exploration for you. And if you need help, there are usually one or two NPC summons in each zone.Once you beat the game and know where the good items are and what kind of build you want to make go ahead and make a character for the online action (soooooo many cosplay possibilities this time).Trust me on this, this game is riddled with secrets.
