Civ 6 Multiple Leaders
To celebrate the launch of Civilization VI, the devs over at Firaxis livestreamed a multiplayer session, showing off a side of the game that matters hugely to many fans but which hasn’t yet been much discussed. We got to take a look at the setup options for a multiplayer game – which included a hotseat mode – and learned that mods will be supported right out of the box.Not sure whether to take the plunge into the depths of human history?
Check out.The livestream (which you can watch in full ) begins with host Pete Murray and lead designer Ed Beach setting up a multiplayer game. “Hot Seat”, a mode in which players take alternating turns sitting at the same machine, is clearly visible from the main menu, settling community questions (Beach explains that hotseat mode was used internally to set up and test different scenarios).
The same options as in the are available on the next page, including the new “Online” game speed, which doubles the game pace and is intended for multiplayer. For the first time, though, there’s a button in the single-player menu that’s alsoavailable here. It’s a big, shiny button on the bottom-left of the screen, labeled “Mods”.One of the things that Firaxis basically nailed about Civilization V was mod support in single-player.

Smoothly integrated with the Steam Workshop via the main menu, mods were easy for players to grab, and a toolkit bundled with the game led to the flourishing of a vibrant modding community, which ensured the game’s constant presence in the Steam top ten.Enabling mods in multiplayer though, was so awkward and potentially disruptive to your game that many players don’t even know it’s possible (there’s a guide, if you’d like to give it a try.) Better yet, once the host enables a mod, it’s automatically pushed to the guests – they don’t need to go and grab the mod manually.The reason for this, explains Beach, is that mods were Firaxis’s own solution to their two main goals for multiplayer in Civ 6. Recognising the perennial challenge of Civ multiplayer – that is, each game takes dozens of hours and must be played over several sessions, meaning many matches never get finished – they wanted a way to make sessions shorter, yet victories still feel meaningful.Mods are the answer, enabling players to create their own scenario games with specialised victory conditions.

Adds several new dimensions to the gameplay of Civ 6, including periods of prosperity and hardship, known in the game as Golden Ages and Dark Ages. Amidst the gameplay additions and the new civilizations introduced to the game, the AI for all the leaders was deepened by the implementation of new, hidden agendas.AI for the different computer-operated leaders of competing civilizations has long been the subject of refinement from Civ game to Civ game, and even from update to update. The use of agendas helps to form a governance and diplomacy type that makes each individual leader unique. Hidden agendas create nuance to the game by allowing the player to slowly uncover motivations of rival leaders by way of espionage or information trading.

Of the hidden agendas added, two have been identified as unfair; as they provide irreversible advantages and drawbacks based on the gender of the player’s ruler. The ‘flirtatious’ agenda provides a bonus to the dealings with the player if their character is of the opposite gender, and gives a disadvantage to diplomacy if the player’s character is of the same gender. The ‘curmudgeon’ agenda provides the inverse bonuses and penalties. As by Eurogamer.net’s Chris Tapsell, the dichotomous nature of these hidden agendas glosses over the actual sexual preferences of several of the leaders- as several of the leaders were on different points on the spectrum than at one end or the other.
The decision to dramatically influence diplomatic balance based on sexual preference in the game reads as especially tone deaf in the wake of the and movements and the exposure of sexism inherent in the entertainment industries. Walking back those updates accomplishes a more gender-balanced system, and shields the game from controversy by having made the changes public.Additionally, the game inadvertently links homosexuality and misanthropy. A ‘flirtatious’ leader was one especially fond of the opposite sex, but a ‘curmudgeon’ only cared to be around their same sex. Homosexual people by nature are not all, as defined by Merriam-Webster, “a crusty, ill-tempered, and usually old man”. To fix Civilization 6’s sexist leaders corrects multiple issues in the latest entry of the beloved series.
