Just take a look at the Product Picture posted. Notice anything familiar?Well, you may or may not have seen it, but believe me, the Citizen CT-500 Calculator is truly the Maruti 800 of Calculators in India. Um, Maruti 800?Yes, you read that right.

This calculator is the most popular models I have seen in the country, and also is one of the sturdiest, and best value. And also one of the most 'pirated' or copied calculators!Next time you go to your local pharmacy / magazine store / kirana shop or just about any other commercial establishment, just keep a look out for the calculator that the place is using. I bet that at least 7 times out of 10, it would be a CT-500.So there, I have summed up the CT-500, and I guess this review is over. Or is it?Well, no. Its not, because the CT-500 deserves a lot more mention than just a few words of praise. No, there is no long history and tradition behind the CT-500.

It does not look like an iPod, and its computing power would find no mention in NASA, but, as a machine which has to do one job, it does it brilliantly.Let's first move onto the specifications:The CT-500 is a 12-digit calculator, i.e. It can post the numbers 12, or 12 digits, while performing calculations. It is also a Check-and-Correct calculator. Now that does that mean?It means that you can use the check keys at the top to review the previous calcuations that you have performed on the machine. Hence, if you find an error in the calculation, you can pinpoint its exact location, and correct it.The check function works backward to as much as 100 steps! Now, I find that a bit of overkill, but, I have asked certain shopkeeprs, and they say that having so many steps is nothing less than a boon for them.P.S. Do not press the ON/AC button, as that erases the recent memory and you cannot check the recent calculations. The 'Correct' Function in the CT-500 is its ability to perform like a 'Backspace' key in a computer. You can delete the older digits if you find that you have accidently entered a wrong digit in the machine.

It is another nifty feature. And of course, the Display of the CT-500 is relatively large and easy to read, even in direct sunlight. So you do not have to strain your eyes a lot while making calculations.Power wise, like almost all modern calculators, the CT-500 is supported by both a Button Lithium-Ion Battery and also Sunlight. Of course, I have used my CT-500 for over 2 years now and it still runs fine. So rest, assured, the calculator should last almost forever, give that it can also run on sunlight. There is also an 'Auto Replay' function which allows you to replay each step of the recent calcuation process, a bit like the 'Check' function, only in this case the numbers move automatically, like a slideshow. But what makes the CT-500 ideal for India are two main attributes, its large keys and its industrial strength durability. The large keys means that it is incredibly easy to type numbers and perform calculations fast. The keys also have a very tactile feel, and are not mushy or tough to press. In fact, they love being pummeled by numbers, numbers, and even more numbers.

Which brings us to the durability aspect. You can press the keys a zillion times, and they will still not break. The CT-500 is not pretty, but the, its not meant to be an iPod. It is a good strong machine which surivies the occasional drop even onto the concrete floor (just don't try it too often).Price and Availbility?Well, here's the problem. There is no uniform pricing for the CT-500. You can find it anywhere, from the roadside shop, to the stationery shop, to even Staples, or the internet.

Locally, you can procure a piece without a warranty for as low as Rs. 150 - 200, depending on your bargaining power. But I have found it listed online for prices as ridiculous as Rs. 1,000!So my advice is, find it locally, and buy it cheap. But watch out for imitation pieces like Kadio CT-500's, they are not as strong or feel as good as the Citizen. The CT-500 is a basic calcualtor at the end of the day, and will not perform scientific calculations. But hey, how many of us need scientific calculators?

The fact of the matter is, that, like the Maruti 800 or the Hero Honda Splendor, the Citizen CT-500 performs its basic function of being a calculator brillianatly, at a price that is affordable to almost everyone. And that, makes it an Icon.
